Wounded Veterans Internship Program in Michigan



The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is introducing a new program focused on helping wounded military veterans transition into the civilian workforce. The Wounded Veterans Internship Program offers wounded veterans paid internships at MDOT facilities throughout the state and is federally funded by the Federal Highway Association (FHWA). The FHWA is MDOT’s partner in the program, along with veteran service organizations in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will host a public informational meeting to discuss 2013 road improvements on M-26 through the village of Laurium. The work is being planned in cooperation with the village, and will include Lake Linden Avenue, and Hecla and Third streets. MDOT Ishpeming Transportation Service Center (TSC) staff Laurium village official’s interested residents and business owners. Third Street: reconstruction with concrete pavement stamped to replicate the original pavement appearance, red-colored sidewalks, historic period lighting, and water main replacement. The village also plans to reconstruct Osceola Street from Third Street to the hospital at the same time. Five teams from Portage schools were among 12 winning teams statewide in the 4th Annual Michigan Design & Build Bridge Challenge held in Lansing on April 30, and a team from Portage was one of nine participating teams in the National Bridge Challenge held in Traverse City on May 18. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) organizes the statewide competition as part of Michigan’s Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) program. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) sponsors the national competition. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is holding a public meeting for interested residents to learn more about the proposed reconstruction and widening of I-75 in Saginaw County. The project would stretch from Dixie Highway north to the south junction of I-675, and extend through Buena Vista and Bridgeport townships. The proposed work includes reconstructing 5.4 miles of the existing six-lane freeway and the addition of a permanent outside lane to ensure traffic congestion relief for weekend travelers. The majority of the reconstruction would occur within MDOT’s existing right of way. Work also includes minor use of Soap Box Derby property at the Buena Vista Lions Park to allow for drainage improvements. MDOT is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) that describes and analyzes this proposed work on I-75 and measures taken to minimize potential harm to the project area.
