MDOT Promotes On Road Bicycling Facilities


The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is sponsoring “Training Wheels” courses around the state designed to educate communities interested in providing on-road bicycle facilities for their residents and visitors. The five-hour course includes both classroom and outdoor instruction. “Training Wheels” shows communities how to integrate bike facilities into existing infrastructure to make bicycling safe and convenient, providing alternate transportation that makes roads more complete for everyone. Classroom instruction using a guide produced by the American Association for State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is followed by an on-road, on-bike portion. The outdoor segment provides participants a firsthand look at the benefits of providing an alternative mode of travel that does not require expensive facilities for communities to build continue

With the busy summer travel season and one of the largest construction programs in the state’s history underway, the Iowa Department of Transportation is expanding the ways in which travelers can conveniently access Iowa travel information when they are on the go. Now, travelers can get personalized “My Reports” alerts via email and/or text message. Alerts keep travelers informed about traffic incidents, road closures and other restrictions that affect the highway routes users have preselected. Iowa’s 511 service is a 24 hour/seven day-a-week service of the Iowa DOT that provides real-time updates about weather-related road conditions, road work, commercial vehicle restrictions, traffic incidents, road closures and other events that impact traffic. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend work and reopen lanes on major state highways in south-central Michigan, including I-94 in Jackson County and M-50 in Lenawee County, for the Quicken Loans 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). The first big race of the season at MIS will be held on Sunday, June 17. Overall, work on most state roads in counties surrounding MIS, which is located in Brooklyn in Jackson County, will be suspended from 7 a.m. Thursday, June 14, until 7 a.m. Tuesday, June 19. However, several MDOT projects still will have restrictions in place over race weekend and MDOT urges motorists to drive with caution in work zones. On US-223 in Palmyra, one lane of traffic is open with a temporary signal on the bridge over the River Raisin.
