Cyclists hopping trains to Hoboken, Newark or New York will now be able to take their bikes on board trains at all 156 NJ stations, except during peak hours on weekdays and weekends. NJ Transit adopted the new universal station policy on bikes at its regular board meeting this morning in Newark, nine months after a petition drive was launched to open bike access at the agency’s 97 stations with so-called “low-level” platforms, where riders have to step up onto trains. Previously, the agency had deemed it too problematic for cyclists to carry their bikes up the stairs onto trains, and had allowed bike access only at the 60 heavy rail stations with upper-level, or raised platforms level with the train doors. NJ Transit will hold a morning information session and two afternoon public hearings on plans to eliminate five bus routes and alter six others, used by a total of 3,200 daily commuters in northern New Jersey. The transit agency said fewer than 100 riders would be left without a reasonable alternative, meaning they would not have another transit station within a half-mile. The agency has 260 bus routes serving 520,000 riders a day. New Jersey Transit has approved a rapid-transit bus route to connect heavily traveled southern New Jersey roads with downtown Philadelphia. The new system would let buses travel on highway shoulder lanes and the median for part of the trip, which would follow Routes 55 and 42 and I-676. The plan would also add 1,800 new parking spaces for commuters in Winslow and Deptford Townships. The projected price is $46 million.
