Five Killed in Four Accidents



Five people were killed in four separate accidents on Utah roads late Saturday night and early Sunday, including two women hit by a truck while walking across Redwood Road. Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, Andrea Fuguel, 37, of Taylorsville, and Erica Warneke, 35, of West Jordan, were leaving the Westerner Club at 3660 S. Redwood Road and crossing the street to the area their car was parked when they were hit by a truck traveling north, West Valley Police Lt. Dale Brophy said. The women, who were not in a crosswalk, were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, where they were pronounced dead, police said. The 46-year-old man who was driving the truck was not injured in the accident and has been cooperating with investigators, police said. In a scene out of every parent’s worst nightmare, a van carrying children from a day care center crashed on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 during the evening rush hour. Fourteen children ranging in age from five months to nine years old were in the van with two adults. The van accident occurred when the driver of the van swerved off the road and hit a tree on Algonquin Parkway near Wingfield Avenue. What caused the driver to swerve is still unknown. Unfortunately, what is known is that the van crash killed one adult, left the driver in critical condition, and injured all 14 kids aboard in varying degrees. All of the children were admitted to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky and the adults were taken to University Hospital in Louisville. An illegal immigrant was reportedly driving a car registered in Massachusetts under her own name when she collided head-on with another vehicle and killed 64-year-old Sara Escudero. Despite not having a valid driver’s license, 32-year-old Auricelli Braga was able to legally obtain license plates from the Registry of Motor Vehicles because she had a valid insurance policy. The RMV is not required to check whether or not the applicant is licensed or even in the United States legally. Rachel Kaprielian, Registrar of Motor Vehicles, told FOX 25 that the RMV has no authority to make laws, and that it is up to the legislature to make the necessary changes. Sen. Hedlund calls the provision “x-registration.” The provision was in the state budget which hit the governor’s desk on Thursday.
