$900,000 for Delaware Anti-Distraction Project Transportation Secretary LaHood



Dover- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that the Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) will receive $900,000 in federal support to expand the Department’s “Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other.” pilot enforcement campaign to reduce distracted driving. “We thank Secretary LaHood for personally coming to Delaware to announce this grant. We will use this money to implement a campaign to encourage motorists to put their cell phones down while driving,” said Delaware Governor Jack Markell. “By raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, we help prevent needless crashes and keep Delaware’s roads safer. Road construction work on U.S. 218 near Janesville will require shifting all northbound traffic onto one of the newly constructed lanes beginning the week of June 11, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office. At Marquis Road/Seventh Street, the new northbound lanes will be 320 feet east of the existing southbound lanes. This area will operate as two separate intersections, each with traffic signal systems that are independent from one another. Motorists are reminded to watch for and obey the traffic signals at both of these intersections. During this new stage of construction, northbound U.S. 218 traffic will not be able to turn west into Janesville at Bremer County Road C-50/Barrick Road. MDOT to open temporary ramp off I-94/I-69 for Water Street businesses in Port Huron Township. Westbound I-94/I-69 traffic is currently maintained on the eastbound side of the freeway between Lapeer Road and Pine Grove Avenue. The ongoing reconstruction/widening of I-94/I-69 is part of a $90 million investment. This temporary ramp will allow customers to reach Water Street businesses during construction. Wounded Veterans Internship Program in Michigan



The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is introducing a new program focused on helping wounded military veterans transition into the civilian workforce. The Wounded Veterans Internship Program offers wounded veterans paid internships at MDOT facilities throughout the state and is federally funded by the Federal Highway Association (FHWA). The FHWA is MDOT’s partner in the program, along with veteran service organizations in Michigan. The work is being planned in cooperation with the village, and will include Lake Linden Avenue, and Hecla and Third streets. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is holding a public meeting for interested residents to learn more about the proposed reconstruction and widening of I-75 in Saginaw County. The project would stretch from Dixie Highway north to the south junction of I-675, and extend through Buena Vista and Bridgeport townships. The proposed work includes reconstructing 5.4 miles of the existing six-lane freeway and the addition of a permanent outside lane to ensure traffic congestion relief for weekend travelers. The majority of the reconstruction would occur within MDOT’s existing right of way. Work also includes minor use of Soap Box Derby property at the Buena Vista Lions Park to allow for drainage improvements. Michigan Department of Transportation will be reconstructing a portion of M-100 between Franklin Street and Taylor Street, along with installing new sanitary sewer, water main and storm sewer, replacing driveway approaches, and upgrading sidewalk ramps and sections of sidewalks. The city of Grand Ledge also will be constructing a non-motorized walkway along M-100 (Clinton Street) between M-43 and Franklin Street.
