Inbound George Washington Bridge traffic began backing up before noon today, with the combination of a Yankees afternoon home game and road work on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which links upper Manhattan and the Bronx, between the GWB and Yankee Stadium. Officials have warned of heavy inbound delays on the GW and its approaches during the weekday morning rush hour while construction continues through mid-October. Work-related closures began at 8 a.m. today, with minimal delays as a result, said Bob Glantzberg, operations manager at TRANSCOM, the East Coast traffic information clearinghouse, which has been coordinating with transportation agencies along the I-95 corridor to minimize the project’s impact. However, in addition to larger-than normal game-day volumes and project-related closures, Glantzberg said traffic was snarled by collisions on short stretch of I-95 between the two bridges, which is largely covered by apartment buildings. “We were doing okay with the Yankee continue
Drivers in a hurry should avoid a major Bismarck roadway or allow enough time for delays. Construction on a major thorough fare can be a set back to anyone trying to get to a destination quickly. We’ve all had the issue of running late for work or a meeting and hit the dreaded orange signage adding to being late but don’t try to rush through the zone or you could end up with more than a delay. “Pay attention to what you’re doing ya know a lot of people are rubber necking trying to see what’s going on and they’re looking around and stuff and these zones got people working and they’re working right up against traffic and a little bit of an error on anybody’s part can get somebody hurt.” says Mark Berg/Bismarck Traffic Engineer. State street is down to 4 lanes. 2 going north and 2 south. Taking over 8 minutes to travel the 2 mile stretch of construction has delayed people’s arrival at restaurants hotels and continue
The state has finally reopened Garden Street Bridge over Route 95 northbound across the Pawtucket River. This bridge has been closed since May 2011 for the Pawtucket Bridge Construction. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has opened the bridge for southbound traffic, while the nearby George Street Bridge, which has been restricted for southbound traffic, will become northbound-only as the project continues. Of 600,000 bridges in the United States, 11% are rated “structurally deficient” or “functionally obsolete” according to figures from the Federal Highway Administration. Rhode Island has among the highest percentage of deficient bridges in the country. Structurally deficient or functionally obsolete bridges are those that have fallen behind in the proper maintenance needed, or simply use technology that has been replaced over time. These bridges are those that are in need of more frequent monitoring and critical, near-term maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement. Out of 754 bridges in Rhode Island, 163 are structurally continue
