Jon Jones Driving License Suspended For 6 Months

Every day in our community, people get behind the wheel without a valid driver license. The problem was highlighted in a crash on Sunday that killed Fairport teacher Heather Boyum, who was struck by a motorcycle and car. Neither driver had a license and one had three prior convictions for drunk driving. There’s no way to know exactly how many drivers are illegally on the road. The Automobile Association of America says two-thirds of drivers with suspended licenses keep driving. The problem is clearly widespread, judging by the number of convictions for driving without a license in Monroe County alone. Sunday’s crash brought back painful memories for Jerry and Geri Spino. Their son, Scott, Scott, was killed in 2004 by a drunk driver with prior DWI convictions. Like Boyum, Scott was a teacher. AAA puts out a periodic study called “Unlicensed to Kill.” It found from 2007 to 2009, 18.2 percent of fatal crashes involved an unlicensed driver. The study found drivers without a license are more likely to leave the scene and have been drinking continue

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was sentenced today after pleading guilty to a DWI charge earlier this year. As expected Jones did avoid a jail sentence for driving while under the influence of alcohol, but he has had his driver’s license suspended for six months and will also have to pay a $1,000 fine. In addition he will have to complete a victim impact panel within 90 days and also has to have ignition interlocks (a breathalyzer device that prevents the car from starting if the driver is over the legal drinking limit) fitted to all his cars. With the sentencing out of the way Jones can now focus his whole attention on preparing for his next title defense against Dan Henderson which will take place at UFC 151 in Las Vegas on September 1st continue

In the July 24, 2012 Daily Camera report of the DUI caused head-on collision on the Diagonal Highway last Saturday, District Attorney Stan Garnett is quoted as saying “I’ve talked recently about previous DUI offenders with more than one prior offense.” I’d like Garnett to consider the following suggestions or variations of them that go beyond merely talking about situation. As I understand it, currently DUI offenders simply have their driver’s licenses suspended. I believe this is a useless action since I doubt DUI offenders care whether or not they have a driver’s license in their wallet or purse if they want to drive. No one can easily spot a DUI offender who is driving without a driver’s license. However, if that same driver were also made to surrender his or her license plates, it is less likely they would take the chance to drive without them continue

3 Accused Of Driving With Suspended Licenses

A Harrison officer stopped a driver July 24 who did not yield while traveling westbound on Halstead Avenue, police said. The officer found that the man’s driver’s license had been suspended. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, and the car was impounded. The man also had a warrant for an unpaid a parking ticket in the Bronx, police said. He was released and is due Aug. 8 in Harrison Town Court. A Peekskill woman was pulled over July 24 for speeding westbound on Park Lane in the area of Burns Road, police said. Her license had been suspended since April 15 for failing to answer a summons in Yorktown. The woman was issued a summons and was taken home by the Harrison police officer. Her car was impounded. While on patrol at 3:18 p.m. Thursday, July 26, an officer noticed a car enter Westchester Avenue eastbound from the Hutchinson River Parkway. The vehicle had a roof rack with construction equipment attached to it in addition to a metal divider between continue

A traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a man on alcohol and no driver’s license charges July 12 in Alva. According to documents on file, Woods County Deputy Sheriff Adam Honeyman had pulled up to a stop sign at Oklahoma Boulevard and Third about 11:40 p.m. when he saw a vehicle with a defective right headlamp. He activated his lights and conducted a traffic stop. Michael Ray Mendez, 39, presented a Texas driver’s identification card but said he did not have a license because it was suspended. Honeyman detected a strong odor commonly associated with an alcoholic beverage coming from Mendez’s breath and person. Nice in the patrol car, Mendez told the deputy he had been drinking liquor and beer at a local bar. He did not perform well on the standardized field sobriety test and refused to take the preliminary breath test saying, “I will fail.” Mendez was placed under arrest and taken to the continue

Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan could lose his license for a year, following his arrest on drunk driving charges. A police report reveals his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Details on Brennan’s arrest were released in a document by the Driver’s License Revocation Office. The police report details that Brennan failed both a field sobriety and breathalyzer test, registering a 0.17. Police say he had glassy, blood shot eyes and was pulled over after speeding on Kailua Road. Police say they received permission from Brennan to move his rental car into a safe spot after his arrest and that’s when they spotted a baggie with white powder they believed to be drugs. It’s not an issue as to whether or not he’d been drinking, the question is whether or not he was impaired to the point they say he was there’s some search and seizure issues as a lawyer I can’t ignore that,” said defense attorney continue

Tractor-Trailer Hits Vehicles in Upstate Work Zone

Six people, including three children, were killed on an upstate road on Thursday when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a vehicle in a work zone and caused a chain-reaction crash, the State Police said. Five of those killed were riding in a sport utility vehicle that was part of the crash and which burst into flames after it was hit, Trooper Jack Keller said. The tractor-trailer ran into the back of one vehicle, causing collisions with a State Transportation Department truck and the S.U.V., which was registered in New York. The vehicles had stopped or were moving slowly because of road repaving on Route 11 in the Jefferson County town of Antwerp. The driver of the Transportation Department truck was Lewis Lottie Jr., 44, of Nicholville, N.Y., Trooper Keller said, and he was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with head and chest injuries. The tractor-trailer driver was identified as James A. Mills Jr. of Myerstown, Pa. He was taken to a hospital for treatment continue

They churn their legs against the traffic, dart between sidewalk-clogging pedestrians, and, according to city officials, pay only occasional mind to the signs and signals that govern the streets. But some of the delivery cyclists who run afoul of the law do so with a quintessential New York City goal: making sure the hot food in their bags remains that way. With a plan that the Transportation Department announced on Friday, though, the city is hoping that the tug between speed and safety for delivery cyclists may skew toward the latter. Beginning next week, a six-person team of department inspectors will patrol, door to door, across the Upper West Side, providing information to businesses about commercial cycling laws. The plan is continue

The eight wrongdoers sat inside a windowless basement classroom, serving a court-ordered penance for their transgressions. For the next 90 minutes, they would learn about the proper rules of the road, how to use hand signals and when to change lanes safely — even if most did not believe they had done anything wrong. “He said I wasn’t in the bike lane,” said Kenny McKissick, a 32-year-old messenger. “But I was on the line.” This spring, the Midtown Community Court began sentencing cyclists who had been issued tickets for certain offenses in and around Midtown Manhattan to a class to learn about bicycles and traffic. “You couldn’t possibly ticket all of the stuff you see irresponsible cyclists do,” said Judge Felicia Mennin, who worked with the nonprofit organization Bike New York to continue

Louisiana Road Rules Take Effect

Louisiana law enforcement will begin enforcing multiple new rules on Wednesday, Aug. 1, which cover trucks, first-time drivers, uninsured vehicles and drunken driving. One new law will bring Louisiana’s commercial driver’s licensing rules in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Lengthier license suspensions will be imposed for drivers caught violating an out-of-service order. Getting behind the wheel of a truck subject to an OOS order will result in the driver’s license being suspended for six months. Currently, state law authorizes 90-day suspensions. Louisiana law already prohibits texting while driving any vehicle. The change specifically prohibits the distracting activity while driving truck. State law already authorizes towing of uninsured vehicles when a driver cannot provide proof of insurance on second and subsequent violations. Starting Wednesday, towing is authorized after a first violation of the state’s mandatory continue

Kim was killed instantly in the crash. They hope that safety provisions included in the transportation bill signed into law by President Obama this month will encourage states to adopt or strengthen laws intended to protect teenage drivers — and everyone who shares the road with them. Teen Dies in Butte Crash & Boating Accident

A teenaged driver has died after being rushed to the hospital Wednesday following a crash on the Old Glenn Highway. According to Alaska State Troopers, the crash between a 2002 Toyota Camry and a 1999 Kenworth dump truck was reported at 12:16 p.m. at Bondeburg Loop and Old Glenn Highway. Troopers say Christa E. Russell, 16, of Palmer, was driving the Camry, trying to cross the Old Glenn to head eastbound when the dump truck hit her. “Russell was flown to Mat-Su Regional (Medical Center) by Life Med Alaska helicopter where she succumbed to her injuries,” troopers report. Two men visiting Alaska from out of state drowned on Lake Louise, near Glennallen, Friday, according to the Alaska State Troopers. The men were fishing in a 14-foot rented boat when they went to restart the motor, said troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain. “The boat was already in gear and moved forward,” he said. Both ended up in the water, DeSpain said. The first man fell in, he said, but it’s unclear whether the second man got in or fell in. Another boat saw them and came by to help, but by the time the men were brought to shore it was too late, DeSpain said. Dispatchers in the Mat-Su Borough got an initial report of the drownings just after noon, he said. The men were not wearing life preservers continue

Drunk Driving & License suspension does not go far Enough

Cadillac needed an entry car more like the BMW 3 Series. Instead of adapting hardware from General Motors’ German Opel brand, as GM has done lately, Cadillac started from scratch and came up with the ATS. It’s the smallest, lightest, least-expensive Caddy and the only one offering four-cylinder engines. It is most definitely not a repeat of the best-forgotten Cimarron of the 1980s, a once-over-lightly Caddy redo of the small, four-cylinder Chevrolet Cavalier that fooled no one and pleased even fewer. ATS, on sale late summer, might lack the purely Germanic feel of a BMW or Audi, but ATS is roundly satisfying to drive. It provides crisp handling, quick acceleration, snappy braking, responsive steering, entertaining technology and an alluring base price of $33,990. The average transaction price of a new car these days is $30,200, according to price tracker and researcher TrueCar.com. And the 3 Series that’s in Caddy’s continue

Chrysler 8 Speed Transmission Squeeze out more Mileage

Chrysler Group LLC’s biggest U.S. investment in the year following its June 2009 bankruptcy exit is about to show up under more of its hoods: transmissions with additional gears to improve performance and boost fuel economy. Eight-speed transmissions, more common in luxury vehicles made by the likes of BMW AG and Volkswagen AG’s Audi, will spread throughout Chrysler’s lineup beginning late this year, said Mircea Gradu, vice president of transmission power train and driveline engineering. The company will introduce the industry’s first nine-speed transmissions by the first half of 2013, he said. “I’m convinced that, sooner or later, others will come up with similar solutions,” Gradu said. “Hopefully, the time will be as long as possible until they catch up with the technology.” While rivals tout hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids and pure electrics, CEO Sergio Marchionne is betting he can meet regulatory requirements continue

Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 217,500 Tribute SUVs in the United States due to a problem with the throttle that could make it difficult to slow down a vehicle after a driver fully or nearly presses down the accelerator. The move comes a day after a similar recall by Ford Motor Co. of 2001 to 2004 model Escape SUVs. Ford and Mazda jointly developed the affected Escape and Tribute models, and they were assembled by Ford. The Japanese automaker’s recall affects vehicles made for the 2001 to 2006 and 2008 model years that were equipped with the 3-liter, V-6 engine and speed control. Ford recalled 423,634 Escapes in the United States and 484,600 worldwide for the problem. U.S. safety regulators are investigating whether the throttle issue was a factor in the death of a teenager driving an Escape in Arizona earlier this year. There have been 68 reported complaints of stuck throttles, including nine injuries and the Arizona fatality continue

Let’s start with Prius c hybrid’s colors: Habanero, Absolutely Red, and Moonglow. Finally, a sense of fun about the eco thing. And it’s from Toyota, usually so tame that boring would be more exciting. Then consider real-world mileage. The test car, government-rated 53/46/50 mpg in the city/highway/combined tests, came close to 50 mpg in our suburban thrash-about. That was with no attempt to drive for mileage, nor any appreciable time spent in the “Eco” mode or the EV setting, which lets you run battery-only slower than 25 mph for most of a mile. The trip computer, which can analyze each leg, showed 60 to 80 mpg for some 4-mile errands around the burbs. The c, smallest and newest of the Prius hybrid family, also handled with grace, composure, little body lean and enough brio to make a driver grin. And salute the drivetrain, which has axed the shudders that hybrids experience when the gasoline engine restarts. Though rated just 99 total horsepower, gas engine and electric motor combined, the c has enough pep continue

Toyota on Track to Regain Sales Avalon

Crushed by last year’s devastating Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Toyota Motor Co. lost the global automotive sales crown to not only General Motors but was also passed by German rival Volkswagen AG. But if the Japanese maker’s pace during the first half of 2012 is any indication it may very well be back as king-of-the-hill this year.

Toyota sold 4.97 million vehicles worldwide between January 1 and June 30th, a commanding 300,000-unit lead over GM, according to newly released numbers. Barring another setback for Toyota, industry analysts suggest it will be difficult for the U.S. rival – or VW, for that matter – to catch up by year-end.
Toyota’s rebound reflects a number of factors including, most notably, its recovery from last year’s Japanese natural disaster which forced most of that country’s makers to shutter key plants for a month or more due to component shortages and then only slowly restart production in Japan and at their overseas plants. While some customers migrated to competing brands rather than wait, it appears many other loyalists hung tight and are only now returning to showrooms. That was considered a major factor behind last month’s 68% surge in Toyota’s U.S. sales.

And the Japanese maker is in the midst of one of its most aggressive product roll-outs ever, with a variety of new models ranging from the 2012 Camry update to the Prius C compact hybrid. And, significantly, Toyota President Akio Toyoda has put premium on more expressive models, such as the upcoming Avalon, which are designed to conquest customers rather than just retain brand loyalists. General Motors, however, has the same idea in mind and has been regaining momentum it lost during the run-up to its 2009 bankruptcy continue reading

Although Lindsay Lohan’s latest car accident was pretty insignificant by itself, it could, in a more rational world, have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back where her driving privileges are concerned. Do we have to wait for her to kill someone before the Golden State takes away her license?

At the very least, her car insurance must be ridiculous. MDOT to Host Public Meeting Regarding

Last October a massive landslide destroyed a half-mile section of SR-14. UDOT’s construction contractor, Kiewit Western Co., successfully opened the road by Memorial Day, ahead of schedule. But slope instability in the west end of the project area required UDOT and Kiewit to expand the scope and duration of the work. We’ve basically got weak layers that are hidden and very difficult to isolate,” says UDOT Senior Geologist David Fadling. An investigation of the slide area was completed during the design phase of the project. Hundreds of feet of six inch diameter borings were drilled, but the weak layers were still difficult to detect. “Unfortunately we were not able to find out where this weak layer was until we started to excavate for it. The steep terrain is causing other difficulty. Workers are excavating over 300 thousand cubic yards of dirt from the top of the slide area and placing it at the toe in order to continue

Accidents in California

Authorities have released the ages of the people who died in Friday’s multi-vehicle accident on Highway 67 in Ramona. A 78-year-old man and 74-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene, along with two other men, ages 20 and 34. The two people in their 70s were traveling in the silver Camry. It has not been confirmed whether they were a married couple, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Legal next of kin have not yet been notified. The hometown of the two elderly people has not been confirmed yet. The 20-year-old driver of the truck was from Poway. The 34-year-old passenger of the truck was from San Diego. Police say that a Long Beach car accident on Redondo Avenue on Saturday has claimed the life of one driver while leaving another with injuries. The Los Angeles County motor vehicle crash occurred at around 10:31 am when a 2010 Scion making a left-hand turn collided with a 2010 Toyota Prius. The Prius’ driver, a 57-year-old Lakewood man, sustained massive chest and head trauma. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Scion’s driver, a 21-year-old Signal Hill resident, broke both his legs. Long Beach police say that the driver of the Scion failed to yield the right of way to the driver of the Prius, who had the green light. Earlier that day, in another Long Beach motor vehicle accident, two people were critically injured during a multi-vehicle collision involving a driver going north in the southbound lanes on the 710 continue

Motor vehicle accidents can be very dangerous when they happen in busy areas. Recently, a car accident occurred at a busy intersection in California which resulted in one person dying and two others getting injured. The car accident occurred on Sunday in West Los Angeles, California. That morning, a car was driving along Federal Avenue. Then, at an intersection, this car collided with a second car which had been driving on the intersecting road (Santa Monica Boulevard). As of Sunday, the police had not made any announcement as to what caused this crash. Unfortunately, this collision was not the end of the accident. The initial collision caused the second car to go out of control. The second car subsequently struck a pedestrian and ran into a third car which was stopped at a gas station. The drivers of the two cars that initially collided were hurt during the accident. The driver of the second car was serious continue

Lindsay Lohan Still Have A Drivers License

Although Lindsay Lohan’s latest car accident was pretty insignificant by itself, it could, in a more rational world, have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back where her driving privileges are concerned. Do we have to wait for her to kill someone before the Golden State takes away her license? At the very least, her car insurance must be ridiculous. Lohan and driving were enough of a concern for Lifetime producers to specify that she couldn’t operate a motor vehicle while they were filming Liz & Dick, in which Lohan starred as Elizabeth Taylor (the insurance for the picture would have been too high). Just this year, she’s been involved in three accidents, one of them a hit and run. Lindsay Lohan and cars don’t appear to mix well, but let’s let history be continue

I like driving cars. And as a driver, I have no problem registering my car in each new state I move to, keeping my insurance up to date, having regular required inspections and submitting to a driver’s test to get my driver’s license. Driving a big piece of metal and glass at high speeds should rightly be a big responsibility that folks should take seriously, that should be regulated to ensure appropriate safety for everyone on the road. Owning a gun should require a similar level of responsibility. As a native Southerner, I like shooting guns. I shot my first gun at Camp McKee, a Boy Scout camp, when I was 12. One of my favorite places to go while living in Houston was the Top Gun shooting range, where it was easy to spend a lot of money on renting out a shooting gallery, buying several boxes continue

If a police officer makes a lawful arrest of a drunken driver, the state is justified in revoking the offender’s driver’s license, the New Mexico Supreme Court decided Thursday in a Farmington case.
The court ruled 5-0 that the state Motor Vehicle Division acted properly in revoking the license of Eric Schuster after he was involved in a minor accident and then found to be intoxicated.
It also affirmed the ruling of former state District Judge Thomas Hynes. He heard Schuster’s first challenge, and ruled that the Motor Vehicle Division had sufficient grounds to take away Schuster’s license. The case began in the early morning hours of May 30, 2009, when Schuster’s motorcycle tipped on its side as he tried to drive it from a parking lot. Farmington police Officer David Karst saw what happened and said he drove to the parking lot because he was concerned that Schuster could be hurt continue

Michigan Transportation Approves Complete Streets Policy

The State Transportation Commission (STC) approved the Complete Streets policy released at its July 26 meeting in Midland. The STC has worked closely with the governor-appointed 18-member Complete Streets Advisory Council on the draft policy. The group’s role, according to law, is to advise the STC, county road commissions and municipalities on Complete Streets policies. Council members represent road and transit agencies, state agencies, walking and biking organizations, and environmental, senior citizens and disabled persons groups.
