Driver’s License Checkpoint And Crash Involving Driver

A five-hour DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint is scheduled Friday night and early Saturday in downtown Redlands.
The checkpoint is planned 10 p.m. Aug. 31 through 3 a.m. Sept. 1 in northbound lanes of Orange Street between Stuart and Pearl avenues, a city spokesman said.
Targeted DUI saturation patrols are also scheduled during the evenings of Saturday Sept. 1 and Sunday Sept. 2, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.
Two recent DUI checkpoints in Redlands resulted in multiple arrests, Baker said.
On Aug. 24, 140 vehicles passed through a checkpoint in the northbound lanes of San Bernardino Avenue at Orange Street.
“Five drivers were arrested for DUI, one person was arrested for domestic violence, one driver was cited for possessing an open container of alcohol and three drivers were cited for driving without a valid license,” Baker said.
On Aug. 25, 50 vehicles passed through a checkpoint in southbound lanes of Wabash Avenue at Brockton Avenue, Baker said

LOS ANGELES – Jack Wyard is 92 and sees no reason to surrender his car keys, not to mention the freedom they give him to get up and go anywhere he wants, whenever he wants.
After all, he said, two years ago he got a perfect score on his written test to renew his license.
“I don’t know what to suggest for anyone else, but I’m still comfortable on the highway and I enjoy driving,” the retired sales manager from Los Angeles said Thursday.
A day earlier, a 100-year-old man attempting to back his Cadillac out of a grocery store parking lot struck and injured 14 people, 11 of them children, police said. Three children remained hospitalized but were expected to recover.
The accident in front of a South Los Angeles elementary school where children had lined up to buy after-school treats brought to the forefront again a debate over how old is too old to keep driving

The San Jose Police Department, Traffic Enforcement Unit, will conduct a Labor Day Weekend Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at an undisclosed location within the city of San Jose, between 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool, effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint and checking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
In 2010, over 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher. In Californian, this deadly crime led to 791 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 32 lives and resulted in 1,641 crashes harming 532 of our friends and neighbors,” said Sgt

Driver Pulled Over Without License

SUSPENDED LICENSE, I-77: A man with a suspended license and a warrant who decided to take his sweet time pulling over for police managed to make a bad situation worse as police arrested him at 2:41 a.m. Aug. 26. The arresting officer reportedly saw the man talking on his phone and looking back at him as he ignored the patrol car’s lights and air horn. The officer was trying to pull him over because the car’s temporary tags were not illuminated or clearly visible. As the officer was readying to report that he was in an official pursuit of the car, the driver pulled over. When asked why he didn’t pull over right away, the driver said he didn’t see the officer. When the officer told the driver he’d seen him looking back at him and talking on the phone the driver denied it but then quickly rebutted saying that he didn’t know. When the officer asked for the man’s license, he gave the officer his social security number. The officer then asked if the man had a license to which the man responded, “I don’t know.” The man told the officer that the car belonged to his girlfriend but claimed to be ignorant of most every other piece of information the officer asked for, including whether his license was suspended, if he had any warrants and how long he’d been driving his girlfriend’s car. Each question was met the same response: “I don’t know.” The officer found out that the man had two license suspensions and a warrant for an unpaid speeding violation in Walton Hills on his record. When the officer asked the man to step out of the car SEE MORE

Rest view, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) – A driver pulled over without a license didn’t hide anything from police.
On Aug. 17, Okaloosa County lawmen arrested a man who apparently had never been issued a Florida driver’s license, yet was still driving a car. His erratic swerving was spotted by a local deputy who pulled his Toyota Tundra over for failure to remain in a single lane. According to the NWF Daily News, the deputy noticed the driver climb from his seat to the back in order to swap the passenger into the SEE MORE

In the first six months they had their driver’s licenses, Danielle Kane, Maddie Richardson and Eden Monsen of Brunswick had to live with certain restrictions. They couldn’t tool around town with a bunch of friends in the car. They couldn’t drive between midnight and 5 a.m. And no cell phone use. “It was definitely a hassle,” Kane, 18, said Wednesday in the parking lot at the Maine Mall, where the three friends were doing some back-to-school shopping. Told that those restrictions for new drivers will be extended from six months to nine months beginning Thursday, all three said they were glad they already have licenses. “I think two or three months is probably long enough,” said Richardson, 17. Maine lawmakers approved legislation this year that requires any new license holder who’s younger than 18 to drive on an intermediate license for nine months. That means no passengers who aren’t family members or at least 20 years old, no driving after midnight and no cell phone calls. Any violation of those restrictions makes the clock on the intermediate license start over. Drivers who got intermediate licenses before Thursday will still have six months of restrictions. Some of the penalties for driving violations are also going up. The minimum fine for texting while driving is now $250, up from $100. That change applies to all drivers, but it’s meant mostly to deter teenagers, many of whom use text messaging as their primary form of communication. Secretary of State Charlie Summers drafted the changes SEE MORE

Multiple Car Crash Reports

EVESHAM — Five people were injured, three of them critically, after a multi-car crash Saturday on Route 73, according to emergency officials. The accident occurred about 5 p.m., just before the highway’s intersection with Route 70. A car traveling northbound crossed the median just north of Center Boulevard and collided head-on with a Jeep going southbound, police said. The driver of the Jeep, an unidentified pregnant woman, was taken by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Both the driver and passenger of the car, an unidentified man and woman, were also flown to Cooper in separate helicopters. They are all in critical condition, according to police. Two other people riding in the Jeep were injured. A 7-year-old child and an elderly woman were taken by ambulance to Ocean Medical Center in Brick. They suffered broken bones and other undisclosed injuries, but were believed to be in stable condition, police said SEE MORE
Two teens and two adults are in the hospital after a car accident involving three vehicles in Williamstown, N.J. Police says a 17-year-old boy was driving a 1995 BMW eastbound on New Brooklyn Road and approaching the intersection with Jones Road. A 2001 Honda Accord driven by a 35-year-old man was traveling west on the same road and approaching the same intersection, according to investigators. Finally, police say a 52-year-old man, driving a 2007 Toyota Highlander, stopped at a stop sign on Jones Road at the intersection with New Brooklyn Road. As the BMW and Honda approached the intersection, police say the BMW attempted a left turn onto Jones Road, entering the right of way of the Honda Accord. The front of the BMW then struck the Honda, according to police. Police say the impact caused the Honda to move to its right, striking the front end of the Toyota SEE MORE
A three-car accident that halted traffic Monday on Route 15 northbound sent five people to the hospital, all with non-life threatening injuries. The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. between exits 52 and 53 in Stratford. All occupants of the vehicles involved in the crash were able to exit their cars before fire and emergency officials arrived, according to Fire Marshal Brian Lampart. Though the accident is still under investigation, Lampart said it was likely the result of a chain reaction that started when one driver rear-ended another. All three cars SEE MORE

After Violation The Driver’s License Is Suspended

One of the penalties for a drunk driving offense is the suspension of a driver’s license. This penalty works as a way to punish a person who disobeys the law, but more importantly it also works as a way to deter repeated drunk driving. Those who decided to drive drunk in one instance may do it again, putting everyone that they share the road with at risk for injury.
An accident recently occurred in Bradenton that was caused by a driver whose license was not temporarily suspended, but was permanently revoked. This time, the 50-year-old driver’s actions led to the injury of another.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, July 17. The man with the revoked license had pulled up to a stop sign on 55th Avenue at approximately 7:50 in the evening with the intent to pull onto U.S. 41. When he drove the vehicle into the road, he pulled out into the path of another car, causing a collision that injured the other driver who was taken to Blake Medical Center.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident report. When they did so, they determined that the driver had been driving on a permanently revoked license

The driver in a New York bus crash that killed 15 people had his driver’s license suspended 18 times and was fired from two previous transportation jobs, according to investigative documents released today.
The driver, Ophadell Williams, was also involved in an accident on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway three days before the March 12, 2011, crash, in which a World Wide Travel of Greater New York bus returning from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut flipped and hit a sign post, shearing off the roof.
“The fact that he had a crash on a bus three days prior and they still were allowing him to drive is indicative of a company that puts profits ahead of passenger safety,” Henry Jasny, vice president of the Washington-based Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said in a phone interview.
The National Transportation Safety Board released the information today ahead of a hearing scheduled in June to determine causes of the accident. The Bronx crash

LOWELL — City Manager Bernie Lynch on Friday suspended firefighter Donald Goyette without pay for six months because Goyette failed to notify the city that his license had been suspended and he subsequently drove a firetruck on two separate occasions.
Goyette’s license was suspended after he was arrested by state police on a drunken-driving charge on Storrow Drive in Boston last October. Because Goyette refused a Breathalyzer, his driver’s license was automatically suspended for 180 days in accordance with state law. A police report said Goyette’s eyes were “red and glassy” and that he said he had had “a couple beers” at a Bruins game.
“Not telling the city was a serious lapse of judgment and a transgression,” said Lynch, who considering firing Goyette. “This case needed a significant amount of discipline.”
Lynch also called Goyette a “a good firefighter” who deserves a “second chance.”
Once Goyette returns to work, Lynch said he will be kept on a “short leash” with the city requiring him to “take steps” to address any “underlying reasons” for the

Indiana Toll Road Accident

Eds: Restores previous version. Adds bylines, quote from family acquaintance. AP Video. With AP Photos.
Seven members of an extended family traveling from Chicago to New Jersey for a funeral, including a newborn and three other children, were killed when their minivan hit a deer and a semi-trailer struck them from behind, police said Friday.
Those killed in the crash on the Indiana Toll Road include a 21-year-old mother and her two sons, one of whom was 6 weeks old. The other victims were a 52-year-old man and his 15-year-old son, and a 26-year-old woman and her 8-year-old daughter, said Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith.
Three other people from the minivan were hospitalized.
A relative in the Chicago neighborhood of Albany Park said the whole family was from Ecuador and many lived in the Chicago area. Segundo Quishpi said he last saw his cousin Cayetano Quizhpe and his cousin’s family on Tuesday for a big family gathering.
“They lived well, and they brought no trouble,” he said.
State police said the victims were members of an extended family composed of three family groups.
One family was identified as Cayetano Quizhpe, 28, who was listed in stable condition. His wife, 21-year-old Maria J. Yupa, and sons, 8-year-old Edwin Quizhpe and 6-week-old Franklin Quizhpe, were killed. Quishpi said the couple had been together many years.
A second family included Pedro Chimborazo, 52, who was killed along with his 15-year-old son, Pedro Chimborazo Yupa. His wife, Maria Antonia Yupa, 36, was listed in serious condition.

A man was taken to Porter hospital Thursday afternoon and later flown to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., after he was struck by a semitrailer on the Indiana Toll Road in Porter County, according to the Indiana State Police.
He was identified by police as Jeffery P. Bohannon, but no age or home town were available.
The case is being investigated as a possible suicide attempt as investigators think the man jumped onto the interstate from an overpass 4 miles east of the Chesterton exit and just west of the county’s border with La Porte County, Cpl. Ben Jones said. No more information was available on the man or the driver of the semitrailer.

La PORTE COUNTY — A highway worker conducting pre-measurements for roadwork was killed on the Indiana Toll Road at about 12:55 p.m. Wednesday after being struck by a semi tractor-trailer near the Michigan City exit.
Indiana State Police said the accident happened on Interstate 80 (The Toll Road) at the 37.8 mile marker, about one mile west of the Michigan City exit. The roadway worker, Chad Flagger, 34 of Lowell, was outside of his vehicle, on the entrance ramp (truck parking lot) next to the right lane, when the accident occurred.
A preliminary investigation revealed that James B. Payton, 60, of Calumet City, Ill., driver of a 2012 Mack semi pulling a box trailer, was in the right lane. The Mack semi veered to the right, out of the right lane when Payton looked across the interstate at the truck parking lot located on the east bound side of the interstate. The Mack semi struck Flagger as he stood on the ramp, according to Indiana State Police.
The Memorial Med Flight Air Ambulance landed in the truck parking lot on the north side of the interstate then flew Flagger to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with massive blunt force trauma injuries. Flagger was pronounced dead at the hospital two hours later

Driver in I-10 crash lacked license

The driver of the car that sparked a Wednesday pileup that closed Interstate 10 for 27 hours did not have a driver’s license, Baton Rouge police said Friday. Delmar Fernandez, 23, 8500 Broadway St., Houston, was issued a traffic citation for driver’s license required and careless operation of a vehicle, police Cpl. Jean McKneely said. Early Wednesday, Fernandez was driving his silver 2001 Honda Civic in the outside eastbound lane of I-10 near Essen Lane when he bumped a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer in the inside lane, McKneely said. Fernandez then hit a retaining wall twice, causing his car to flip and land in the middle of the interstate, McKneely said. The man driving the tractor-trailer stopped and parked his rig in front of Fernandez’s car so it would not be hit by oncoming traffic, McKneely said. The driver of a 2005 International Enterprise Transportation tanker truck carrying 8,700 gallons of isobutene saw the crash and stopped behind the tractor-trailer, McKneely said

Editor’s Note: On Wednesday, the Vermont State Police retracted their earlier statement and said the cast was on the driver’s left foot, not his right foot. The story below has been updated to reflect the most recent information.
The driver who was killed along with his girlfriend and infant son in a head-on collision Monday morning on Interstate 89 in Bolton was driving without a valid driver’s license and with a cast on his left foot, according to police. Investigators still are trying to determine what caused Jason Potvin, 29, to drive a Subaru Legacy across the interstate’s median at about 7:30 a.m. Monday and into oncoming southbound traffic. The car slammed into a Chevy Silverado pickup truck, killing Potvin, 29-year-old April Otis and their 7-month-old son, Hunter. The family lived in Williamstown.
State police declined to say Tuesday whether they thought the cast might have contributed to the crash.

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — there’s new push to allow illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses in California. Supporters of the plan held a news conference in Boyle Heights Thursday. The battle for driver’s license for undocumented immigrants has gone on for at least a decade. Backers of a new bill hope to pressure Governor Jerry Brown and state lawmakers into approving the legislation. Southern California Immigration Coalition, along with undocumented students and workers and their supporters, gathered for Thursday’s news conference to call for passage of a bill sponsored by California Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles). Cedillo’s measure would allow driver’s licenses for undocumented migrants and immigrants. He’s expected to introduce the bill in the Legislature this week. Immigrant rights groups say driver’s-license checkpoints and 30-day impounds by L.A. authorities have unfairly targeted poor and undocumented people in the Hispanic community

Driver’s Licenses For The Undocumented

Under a sweeping new Obama administration policy, hundreds of thousands of young immigrants could be freed from the threat of deportation and granted work permits. But that’s only the first step.
Illegal immigrants who receive the two-year reprieve, known as deferred action, will still occupy a kind of legal limbo: Despite criticisms that the new initiative represents a broad “amnesty,” deferred action is a temporary measure that does not confer permanent legal status or a path to citizenship. There is still an open question regarding what public benefits immigrants can qualify for.
Among those potential privileges is the ability to get a driver’s license. The issue has already divided states, and enforcement-minded Republican governors have begun pushing back.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman told reporters that immigrants granted relief would not become eligible for driver’s licenses;

About 400,000 illegal California immigrants with federal deferrals will be granted driver’s licenses for the first time in nearly two decades, giving them the right to live and work in the US for at least two years without fear of deportation.
Immigration agencies are now accepting applications for deportation deferrals under President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which was made into law by an executive order on June 15. For $465, young illegal immigrants can apply to a program that would let them temporarily stay in America and obtain a work permit.
The program is open to undocumented immigrants between the ages of 15 and 31, who came to the US before age 16 and have no criminal record. They must also been in the US for at least five years and have received a high school diploma, or be in the process of earning one.
California is extending the privileges, allowing immigrants eligible for the program to also earn a driver’s license. This privilege is currently banned under state law.
“But it remains uncertain whether clarifying legislation or regulations will be necessary,” the Department of Motor Vehicles wrote in a statement.
California Gov. Jerry Brown has repeatedly spoken against changing the law to allow all undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

DENVER — Colorado voters this fall could decide whether undocumented immigrants should be able to get state-issued driver’s licenses, if proponents of Initiative 52 can get enough signatures to put the measure on the November ballot.
Needing 86,105 valid signatures to get the measure certified, supporters rallied Tuesday morning at the state Capitol in an effort to raise awareness about their efforts.
“Right now under the law, people can’t get car insurance, they’re not allowed to buy a car, because they can’t get the driver’s license,” said Jennifer Piper, a volunteer with the Yes on 52 campaign.
“Here in Colorado we have the opportunity to make our roads safer and our communities safer and encourage people to be able to report crime and be a part of this community,” Piper said.

2012 Drunk And driving accident

Kelli-Jo Denise Smith has been named as the victim of a fatal car accident Sunday morning that allegedly involved a drunk driver. Smith, 38, was a passenger in a truck that was hit by a Mercedes Benz, after the car ran a red light at the intersection of Bow Trail and Sarcee Trail.

On behalf of William R. Rawlings & Associates, LLC posted in Drunk Driving Accidents on Friday, August 10, 2012. Tragedy can strike on Utah roadways at any moment. Unfortunately, too many accidents are caused by drunk drivers who decide to get behind the wheel, even though they shouldn’t. These drivers often end up in horrific accidents which can cause serious injury or even death. One individual died recently and authorities are blaming the accident on drunk driving. The accident started when a man from out of state had been allegedly driving in an intoxicated manner. While driving down a road in Utah, he crossed the centerline and struck another car. While he lived through the accident, the other driver wasn’t so lucky. He died as a result from injuries sustained from the accident. After investigating the accident, police officials have filed vehicular homicide charges against the 32-year-old driver. A warrant for the man is currently out. If he is convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Though the man is facing criminal charges, this is scant relief to the victim’s family. Nothing can replace the man who was lost in the see more

On behalf of Dansker & Aspromonte Associates posted in Dram Shop Liability on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. A drunk driving accident in the Bronx earlier this month left a 23-year-old backseat passenger dead and an 18-year-old driver facing a slew of serious criminal charges, including vehicular manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said the driver first struck a parked vehicle near Woodlawn Cemetery and then lost control of his 1998 Nissan Altima and crashed into a utility pole, which caused the backseat passenger to suffer severe body trauma. The driver and another 23-year-old passenger were also injured in the crash but were listed in stable condition at a local hospital a short time later. Based on the limited amount of information available at this time, there’s simply no way to know whether this particular accident will lead to a liquor liability (dram shop) lawsuit against a bar, restaurant or individual. Generally speaking, however, a significant percentage of drunk driving accidents give rise to these types of claims each year. So then, what facts might enable the Bronx drunk driving accident victim’s estate or his surviving family members to successfully pursue see more

Fatal Accident & Driver’s License Suspension

President Barack Obama’s new immigration program will mean some undocumented immigrants will be granted driver’s licenses — and some will not, depending on where they live. It’s the first sign that states will differ dramatically in their implementation of the President’s program. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) told reporters Friday that it will grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants who get an “employment authorization document” under Obama’s program. Days before, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed an executive order directing state agencies to deny driver’s licenses and other public benefits — such as welfare and in-state tuition — to undocumented immigrants under the President’s program. Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman issued a statement continue

Portland mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith has acknowledged a fifth driver’s license suspension, in the 1990s. “During college I did have a number of moving violations and a license suspension,” Smith wrote in an email to The Oregonian over the weekend. “I have never driven under the influence, and no one has been hurt while I have been behind the wheel. That said, I have done a terrifically bad job during multiple intervals of keeping a clean record and responding to tickets continue

On June 4, 2012 at approximately 11:10 p.m. officers responded to the area of Route 4 near Kingston Creek Road for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries. Preliminary investigation reveals, a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Michael Allan Heller, 37 of Lusby, Maryland with passenger Holly Hope Full wood, 32 of Lusby, Maryland was traveling south on Route 4 from Calvert County. The Harley Davidson motorcycle was being followed by a 2003 Ford Taurus passenger car, operated by Richard Kenneth Cornelison, 27 of Lusby, Maryland. The motorcycle approached a 2002 Jeep Cherokee, operated by Jacklyn Marie Cox, 21 of St. Leonard, Maryland with passenger, Katelyn Ruth Wilt, 21 of St. Leonard, Maryland in the vehicle. The Jeep Cherokee was also traveling south on Route 4. Mr. Heller applied brakes; however, still collided with the rear of the Jeep Cherokee. The collision ejected both occupants of the motorcycle. After being struck, the Jeep Cherokee skidded sideways. Mr. Cornelison swerved to avoid the motorcycle and collided with the Jeep Cherokee continue

States Split On Immigrant Licenses & Suspended License

PALM COAST — A 76-year-old woman whose car careened into a Publix supermarket in April and injured 10 people, some severely, said in court Thursday she was unaware that her driver’s license had been suspended. County Judge Sharon Attack found Thelma Wagenhoffer guilty of careless driving and fined her $500 and suspended her license for three months, the maximum allowed under the law. Wagenhoffer license had already been suspended indefinitely by the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Attack also ordered that Wagenhoffer must retake her driving test before she can get her license back. Wagenhoffer had entered a plea of not guilty in June to careless driving but Thursday she changed continue

State Rep. Jefferson Smith, a candidate for Portland mayor, acknowledged shortly after jumping into the mayor’s race that his driver’s license had been suspended in 2004. But newly obtained records from Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services show Smith received three additional suspensions, including one as recently as 2010. On Jan. 12, 2010, records show that police in Woodburn cited Smith, then running for his second term in the Oregon House, for the improper display of stickers and failure to show proof of insurance. His license was continue

As a high school student in Phoenix, Carla Chavarria said she felt left out when her classmates turned 16 and started getting driver’s licenses. An undocumented immigrant brought to the U.S. at age 7, Chavarria, now 19, thought her wait was nearly over, thanks to a new federal program offering young immigrants work permits without fear of being deported. Then came an executive order from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer instructing state agencies to deny driver’s licenses and any other state benefits to those qualifying for the Obama administration program. “I was almost there,” said Chavarria, who runs her own advertising and graphics-design business, after a protest against Brewer continue

Driver’s License Suspended & Deferred Action

WASHINGTON — Thankfully, I haven’t been in many automobile accidents. But in the one major crash I was in involving another driver, I took down quite a bit of information. The accident wasn’t my fault. Nonetheless, I wanted to make sure the other driver wouldn’t try to change his story after I contacted his insurance company. I had my reporter’s notebook handy and took down the guy’s driver’s license number, insurance information, home telephone number (it was long before cellphones were ubiquitous) and his home address. I even collected similar information from a witness to the accident. When I called to report the crash, the claims representative was impressed with how thorough I had been. Turns out most of the information I gathered could have put the driver and the witness in jeopardy of identity theft, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). But this was years before crooks really knew how valuable personal information can be. It would appear I’m not alone in what information I mistakenly think needs to be collected after a car accident. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s decision to deny driver’s licenses to young undocumented immigrants who qualify for Deferred Action has drawn criticism from the ACLU, which says the move shows a failure to grasp the subtleties of immigration law. “We think the governor is mistaken with respect to the driver’s licenses. This is an example of why states shouldn’t get involved in immigration law because they don’t have an understanding of the complexity of these types of laws,” Alessandra Soler, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, told Efe Thursday. Brewer on Wednesday signed a directive ordering state agencies to take immediate measures to prevent Deferred Action applicants from

On Jan. 12, 2010, records show that police in Woodburn cited Smith, then running for his second term in the Oregon House, for the improper display of stickers and failure to show proof of insurance
