An elderly man, charged with homicide by negligent driving, is forced to turn over his driver’s license. Archie Van Wormer made his initial appearance in court today. Van wormer, who is 90-years old, is accused of veering off Claremont Avenue and hitting and killing a bicyclist in June. Today, he was released on a $25,000 signature bond, and forced to surrender his driver’s license. The judge also ordered him to be placed temporarily in an assisted living home and for his caretaker to remove all car keys from the house. Kentucky driver’s licenses are getting some security upgrades, and circuit court clerks’ offices will be installing new equipment to implement the improvements. The Transportation Cabinet says the new license has multiple layers of security features to make it harder for counterfeiters to produce fake IDs. Among the new features are a digital watermark that can’t be seen by the human eye, improved lamination, a hologram with an ultraviolet “ghost” image and bank note-quality printing. Iowans can use their iPads to practice for their driver’s license test with a new app released by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The app was developed in a partnership with Iowa Interactive to help Iowans become safe drivers and to help them successfully complete the knowledge exam, state officials said today. The app generates 15 questions randomly chosen from among 69 included in the real knowledge test given at driver’s license stations throughout Iowa. Users can repeat the test as often as they like, each new test generates a new list of 15 questions. The app also tracks a user’s high scores.
